On the 23rd of June 2026, Active Schools Dundee welcomed 70 pupils with additional support needs to the RPC to celebrate the upcoming Commonwealth Games. This was a fantastic event, beginning with an opening ceremony where each of the schools attending represented a Commonwealth Games country. The countries represented were Canada, Australia, Scotland, Jamaica and South Africa.
The event provided pupils with the opportunity to try seven different sports. The sports on offer were basketball, judo, athletics, weightlifting, bowls, badminton and Gaelic football. These sessions were delivered by local clubs and organisations from across Dundee.
Dundee Dragons delivered badminton and basketball, Tayside Judo came along to deliver judo, Active Dundee delivered athletics and weightlifting, Balgay Bowling Club delivered bowls, and Oisín from Dalriada delivered Gaelic football.
This was a fantastic event set up by Active Schools Dundee to celebrate the upcoming Commonwealth Games, but more importantly, it was an event that enabled pupils with additional support needs to try a variety of different sports in a warm, encouraging and supportive environment. The event was a great success, and the encouragement, support and positive attitude from everyone on the Active Schools team played a huge part in making the day the success it was.
Wiktoria, Active Schools Dundee Modern Apprentice, was in attendance during the event and reflected on the day, saying:
"This was an incredible event to be part of. It was great to see so many pupils having fun and having the opportunity to try different sports in such a fantastic environment. Above all, my hope is that it showed the pupils that, no matter their challenges, they can participate in and excel in sport with the right support. From my perspective, events like these make a very positive and lasting impact on everyone involved.
I hope that this event is the beginning of more opportunities like this and helps to create even more inclusive events across all schools."
