Active Schools Volunteer Awards 2018

Active Schools, Dundee celebrates volunteering in school sport.

The Active Schools Volunteer Awards ceremony took place at the Apex Hotel on the 12th May 2018, honouring the very best volunteers who go above and beyond in providing school sport opportunities for local pupils.

Active Schools were once again delighted to have organised and hosted this fantastic event which recognises and rewards the outstanding achievements within Dundee Schools. Over 160 people attended the awards which were opened by an excellent display from St Paul’s Academy Dance Group (Winners of the Dundee Secondary School Dance Competition).

As 2018, is the Year of Young People, each award was presented by one our Young Ambassadors, Amy McKay and Lara Taylor from Craigie High School and Mitchell Ramsay and Megan Buist from Braeview Academy.  Presenting to a large audience is not an easy task however, all the Young Ambassadors were exceptional in their presentation of each award.

The audience was also inspired by Sofia Ramzan’s speech (Commonwealth Games Athlete), who spoke about the highs and lows of gaining a place in Scotland’s ladies gymnastic team, to represent Scotland at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia.

2018 saw some incredible nominations across all 11 categories, providing our judging panel with a few difficult decisions. Many of the school nominees were more than worthy of receiving the SportScotland’s School Sport Award. The School Sport Award aims to; encourage schools to self-reflect and continuously improve, recognise and celebrate successful PE & school sport models and, put young people at the forefront of the decision making, planning and implementation processes.

Active Schools Manager, James Fenna said:

“This year’s event was outstanding and Active Schools would like to thank all those involved in the event.”

“The work volunteers are doing in our schools is very important; it gives children and young people across Dundee the best start in life, creating a lifelong love of sport from an early age which will continue well into adulthood.  We thank all of the 630 volunteers from across the city for all your hard work and dedication throughout the year”.

In the last year volunteers across the city have provided some 14,000 sports sessions and contributed to 219,000 pupil visits to sports clubs and we now have just under 50% of the school role taking part in school sport activity.

“This ceremony is a way of thanking all of our volunteers who willingly give their time to enable others to play the sport they love.”

Active Schools would not be able to run this event without support of local business.  This event was kindly Sponsored by McGill (Main Sponsor), STEP, Dundee Football Club Community Trust, Dundee & Angus College, University of Abertay, Idverdy, Destination Judo, The Courier, Xplore Dundee, Leisure & Culture Dundee, Foxlake Dundee.
