The School Sport Coaching Academy is a sport leadership programme that supports young people to develop their skills and experience in sports coaching and officiating. The programme – a partnership with the Dundee Academy of Sport and Dundee & Angus College – aims to give young people from Dundee schools the opportunity to gain sports coaching or officiating qualifications and practical coaching experience within a school or sports club setting.
If you are a pupil in S4 or S5 (during the current academic year) and are interested in developing your leadership skills through sport, we would like to offer you the opportunity to apply for a range of sports coaching courses.
Make it Happen Basketball Course
Make it Happen Basketball Course, a course designed to give you the basic skills in order to be able to facilitate a fun and engaging basketball sessions helping develop basic physical movement skills, technical skills, and build basic tactical understanding by using games based coaching. Pupils must be aged 16 or over to apply for this course.
Netball Getting Started
This course covers the transition from primary to secondary netball. It is aimed at young coaches who will be working with young players and provide them an introduction to netball. The course is presented in a way that encourages individual-cantered learning for young people. Participants must be aged 16 or over on the date of the course.
Badminton Basics is a six-hour course geared towards coaches with little or no badminton experience. It focuses on fun games for beginners, allowing candidates to lead sessions at schools and assist more experienced coaches at clubs. Candidates receive a certificate of attendance and a pack. The minimum age for participants is 14 years of age.
This course is aimed at candidates starting out on the tennis coaching pathway. The course covers the basics of tennis, variations of the sport, drills and warm up activities. The minimum age for participants is 14 years of age.
Emergency First Aid
This 6 hour course will provide practical training in assessing situations and circumstances in order to act safely, promptly and effectively in an emergency. It will deal with administering basic life support as well as providing appropriate first aid for common injuries that arise in sport. Participants must be aged 16 or over on the day of the course.
Table Tennis Introduction Award
This course is aimed at candidates starting out on the table tennis coaching pathway. The course covers basic strokes, fun games, rules & umpiring, setting up practises and coaching skills. Participants must be aged 16 or over on the date of the course and have basic table tennis bat skills.
Level 2 Award in Dance Leadership
The Level 2 Award in Dance Leadership provides the ideal starting point for learners who are aged 14+ year olds to develop their leadership skills through the medium of dance. This qualification aims to prepare responsible, motivated and confident learners who can lead safe, purposeful and enjoyable dance sessions.
The purpose of the award is to provide young people with an opportunity to develop a better understanding of the basic coaching skills in hockey. The Leaders Course is a six hour practical course that will give you the very basic coaching fundamentals.
Junior Jog Scotland
Junior jogscotland provides young leaders with the tools to led a range of games suitable for primary school aged children. The programme of running related games can be used for as little as a 10 minute run around for youngsters to let off steam, to more sustained running games. The games are a great way to show children that physical activity is fun, and will appeal to even the most inactive of youngsters.
Football 1.1 Development Activities
This 6-hour course is open to all interested parties aged 16 and over, experienced or otherwise, who work with youth/adults 13+. In addition to delivering new content, the course will assist coaches to develop their coaching technique, focus on skill development and will explore the best age specific activities for developing young players.
Go Lead Award
The Go Lead Award provides an ideal starting point for people wishing to develop their leadership skills and increase their confidence delivering sport activities for young people. This course is ideal for those wanting to complete the SCQF Level 4 or 5 in Sports Leadership in the future. The minimum age for participants is 14 years of age.
ClubGolf training for young leaders is a introduction to the basics of leading golf sessions for primary pupils. ClubGolf introduces children to golf through fun activities and uses safe, child-friendly equipment. Focusing on putting, chipping and full swing. ClubGolf training enables coaches and leaders to help children understand the basics of how to play golf – and see success quickly. Clubgolf is open to anyone aged 14+.
