Dundee Schools Cross Country Championships

Primary Schools

On Wednesday 15th March the Active Schools team held the Primary Schools Cross Country championships with the highest entry in years of 323 pupils from p6-P7.  Entrants came from 22 different schools across Dundee.

This led to 4 very competitive races around the testing Baxter Park route that takes in the infamous Daisy Hill! The weather conditions were good for running, with a cool breeze following the runners around the course.

Great effort and determination was required to complete the course, and smiles and a sense of achievement soon replaced the grimaces that crossed the finishing line! Well done to all who took part!

Thank you to The wonderful volunteers from Dundee and Angus College who marshalled the course and encouraged the runners as they went past.

Thank you also to Fiona Gibson, representing Junior parkrun who helped to present the medals.  She also explained what Junior parkrun is and how the pupils can get involved.  If they can survive daisy hill, they can definitely take on the junior parkrun challenge which takes place every Sunday morning at 9.30 am for 4-14 year olds.  It takes place at St Leonard Place, Dundee, across from St Andrews Primary School. Register online and print your barcode, which you need to get your time recorded!  Please see this link for more information http://www.parkrun.org.uk/strathmartine-juniors/.

In the afternoon the Secondary event took place, this event is ran by the Secondary school PE departments with help from Active Schools.  Again we had volunteers from Dundee and Angus College who marshalled the routes which get longer the higher up the age groups we go!

There were 7 races this time with S1 Girls, S1 Boys, S2-3 girls, S2 Boys, S4-6 Girls, S3-4 boys and S5-S6 Boys.  8 Secondary Schools were represented with over 250 competitors. Again there were some very competitive races.  Well done to everyone who took part.

The sun even came out for some of the races!

The next Athletics events take place at Caird Park Athletics Track for the Primary Track and Field Championships on May 31st and the Secondary event on June 14th.
